US-African Leaders Summit: Expert tells Jonathan to make security a priority issue

The first US-African Leaders Summit

An Abuja financial analyst, Mr Godwin Iluobe, has urged President GoodLuck Jonathan to make security in Nigeria top of issues at the ongoing US-African Leaders Summit in Washington DC.

Iluobe made the call in an interview on Tuesday in Abuja.

“For me, I am concerned about Africa and Nigeria agenda but the most important concern is the security issue in Nigeria.

“If you ask me, I would have thought that security and defence should be the areas Jonathan should focus on at the summit.

“Our expectation should be that the president should extract concrete support from President Barak Obama on security, because that is the most challenging issue currently in the country,’’ he said.

Iluobe said that it was unfortunate that governance in Nigeria lacked transparency, noting that Nigerians needed to have aggregated their opinions on issues which the president would have taken to the summit.

“We must ask the American Government to genuinely come and assist us in tackling the security problem in the country.

“When we have security in the country, health and trade issues may follow,’’ he said.

According to him, if insurgency continues in Nigeria, no investor will come; the economy will continue to suffer, while poverty and unemployment rates will continue to rise.

“ So, security issues must be tackled for positive change in the economy,’’ he insisted.

NAN reports that Jonathan is among no fewer than 50 African leaders participating at the US summit being hosted by Obama in Washington.
